Potatoes are a high value crop and generate more employment than cereals. Today, potatoes represent the fourth most important food crop in the world, with annual production approaching 300 million tonnes. China is the world's biggest producer of potatoes, growing over 75 million tonnes a year. Belarus is the world's largest consumer, eating 171.2 kg/year per person.
