The highlands of central Kenya are densely populated. Farms are
small, typically with six or more crops, three kinds of livestock
enterprises, and maybe five tree productions systems. These Kenyan
highland farmers are among the most productive of all smallholders
in rainfed Africa. Despite their success, the farmers are facing
hard times. The population is rising and average plot size
shrinking. The market for coffee is severely depressed and there is
a local glut of milk production. To sustain this area's
intensification, farmers will have to diversify their enterprises
even more. Kenyan and CGIAR scientists are introducing
higher-yielding crop varieties, improved lilvestock health and feed
strategies, and high-value trees, such as macadamia. In addition,
the scientists are providing research results which will promote
more productive livelihoods.
