Kitengela
Agricultural research initiatives to save Kitengela's
wildlife-rich agroecosystem have been initiated by CGIAR Centers
and their partners. Development of sustainable livestock and
wildlife management options that protect the environment and
livestock while broadening livelihood opportunities in the
community are the goals of the research. By providing objective
assessments of the options for pastoral livelihoods and natural
resources conservation, CGIAR econmists and ecologists are
contributing to better policy options fo rthe Maasai community. The
importance of this evidenced-based dialogue was underscored when
the Kenya Minister of the Environment announced that the Government
would not be fencing Nairobi National Park. This decision will
allow the Maasai community to continue to benefit from wildlife and
tourism.
