In 2009-2012, IWMI conducted a study for the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) on the performance of their agricultural water management interventions across five countries in Africa and Asia: Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Weak community engagement was found to severely hinder the effectiveness of interventions in all countries. An original training curriculum was developed for local project managers, social mobilisers, irrigation engineers and government extension officers, based on research findings, to improve community engagement in the particular case of agricultural water management interventions.
