CGIAR: Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research
Nourishing the Future through Scientific Excellence

Global Festival at Tokyo’s Hibiya Park, October 4-5, 2008

This annual festival in Tokyo is aimed at gaining more public understanding and support for international development cooperation, especially for the Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This year’s theme was “All of Us are Global Citizens”.

More than 200 organizations, including embassies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), international organizations and other development partners introduced their development cooperation activities. Over 96,000 visitors - up 16,000 from last year - visited the park and exhibitions during the two days.

The Japan-CGIAR partnership was highlighted at the CGIAR booth. The booth included new posters and recent brochures sent by the CGIAR Secretariat and the Research Centers. Also highlighted was the Japan-CGIAR Fellowship Program. Since JIRCAS is the CGIAR focal point institution in Japan, JIRCAS staff kindly attended the booth and introduced the work of the Centers. Several Japan-CGIAR Fellows also manned the booth.

The festival provided an excellent opportunity for the public, especially young Japanese students, to gain a deeper understanding of the role of the CGIAR in global agricultural research and development.
