France, CGIAR Strengthen Partnership
The French Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries hosted the Eleventh Meeting of the Executive Council of the CGIAR (ExCo 11) at its Paris headquarters, October 17-18, 2006. The event marked the renewal and further strengthening of the France-CGIAR partnership which dates back to 1971.
Three activities were held on October 17 back-to-back with ExCo 11, at the invitation of the French Minister of Agriculture and the CGIAR Chair .
A roundtable discussion on “Facing the Changes in Global Agriculture: The Response of International Agricultural Research” underlined the importance of gaining more in-depth knowledge and the need to strengthen public-private partnerships at both national and international levels.
The second event was the launch of the publication “France and the CGIAR: Achieving Results in International Agricultural Research,“ a compendium of over 40 articles by more than 130 authors and co-authors addressing, among others, long-term management of genetic resources. CGIAR Chair Katherine Sierra noted that the book is a testament to the achievements of the scientific partnership between France and the CGIAR. Finally, and most importantly, French research agencies and the CGIAR signed a Letter of Agreement pledging to focus collaborative work on major global issues such as the doubling of food demand by 2050 and the management of the planet’s renewable resources in an economically and socially sustainable manner. CEMAGREF, CIRAD, INRA, and IRD signed the Agreement on behalf of France while the CGIAR was represented by the CGIAR Director and the Chair of the Alliance Executive. A France-CGIAR committee meeting is planned for February 2007 to draft proposals for joint research and training programs. Click here to read the agreement.
