Seminar: Agriculture Research for Development in the 21st Century: Opportunities for Strengthening the China - CGIAR Partnership

Held at Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), Beijing April 4, 2005  

As part of an effort to review and strengthen research partnerships with the CGIAR, the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) hosted a one-day seminar. Over 50 participants from China (Ministry of Agriculture, CAAS, and Chinese Academy of Forestry Science and Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences) joined with CGIAR partners, including representatives from eight CGIAR Centers, CGIAR Director and Secretariat staff. Masa Iwanaga, Director General of CIMMYT, represented the Center Directors Committee (CDC) at the meeting.

The morning session, chaired by Zhang Lijan, CAAS featured presentations by Li Zhengdong and Chen Zhixin (Ministry of Agriculture), Zhai Huqu and Liang Qu (CAAS), Francisco Reifschneider (CGIAR) and Masa Iwanaga (CDC).

The afternoon session was co-chaired by Zhang Lijian (CAAS) and Masa Iwanaga (CDC), and included technical presentations from CGIAR Centers (CIMMYT, CIP, ICRAF, ICRISAT, IFPRI, ILRI, IPGRI, and IRRI). From China, presentations were made by China National Rice Research Institute, Institute of Crop Sciences, Chinese Academy of Forestry Sciences, Institute of Agricultural Economics, Institute of Livestock Research, and Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences.

The Seminar provided excellent summaries of Chinese and CGIAR Center research activities, impacts, and areas for potential collaboration.
