Agricultural Research for Development (ARD) in Europe: Towards a Shared Vision
Brussels, Belgium, June 28-29, 2007

An international conference on “Agricultural Research for Development (ARD) in Europe: Towards a Shared Vision” was convened in Brussels, Belgium, June 28 - 29, 2007. Christian Hoste of CIRAD (the coordinating institution) organized the conference with support from the European Research Area-Agricultural Research for Development Network and from the Belgian Government.

Over 160 participants attended the conference, including Christian Patermann from the Research Directorate-General of the European Commission (EC) and Luis Riera Figueras of the Development Directorate-General, also of the EC, as well as representatives from several European countries including France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. Representatives from EIARD, GFAR, FARA, AARINENA, NEPAD, Oxfam and several other NGOs, FIPA and farmer organizations also participated. Representatives of the CGIAR (Alliance Executive, Science Council and CGIAR Secretariat) also attended. The agenda and related documents are posted at http://conference.era-ard.org

The speakers offered different points of views on the questions indicated below, followed by a discussion among participants:

  • What will the ARD landscape look like in 2025?
  • Will there still be a need for an ARD capacity in Europe in 2025?
  • How should the European ARD capacity evolve to meet its partners’ needs and enhance its contribution to MDGs?
  • What could then be a shared vision for European ARD?
