The Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) convened the first Global Forum for Leaders for Agricultural Science and Technology (GLAST) on October 24-25, 2006 in Beijing.

The Forum brought together leaders of national agricultural research organizations throughout the world and China’s provincial academies of agricultural sciences with the objective of reaching a consensus on how to most effectively address sustainable development issues, and how best to facilitate and strengthen global research partnerships to meet the identified challenges to sustainable agricultural development.

The Vice Minister of China’s Ministry of Agriculture, Wei Chaoan, inaugurated the Forum while Zhai Huqu and Qu Dongyu, CAAS President and Vice President, respectively; FAO Assistant Director General Alexander Muller; and CGIAR Director Francisco Reifschneider made keynote presentations. Muller described global agricultural research trends; Reifschneider spoke on the importance of investments in global agricultural research and reflected on ways to mobilize resources to strengthen investments in agriculture; and Zhai described the achievements, challenges and perspectives of agricultural research in China. Forum participants discussed the roles of agricultural technology innovation, food security and safety, nutrition and health in sustainable agricultural development and concluded with the release of the Beijing Statement.
