CGIAR Presence at Asian Development Bank Annual Meeting
Over 3,500 participants attended the 39th Annual Meeting of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Hyderabad, India, on 3-6 May 2006. According to ADB President, Haruhiko Kuroda, “more must be done to include the poor in the region’s plans for growth. Including the poor means investing in people – investing in rural development and basic human services, like health and education, and investing in infrastructure that directly benefits the poor by providing access to markets and services that can improve their standard of living.”
Kuroda expressed hope that the region can approach eradication of extreme poverty in the not-too-distant future and predicted that the number of people living on less than a dollar a day would fall to around 100 million by 2015 – the critical target year for meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). At present the figure is close to 1 billion. He reaffirmed the ADB’s commitment to achieving the MDGs and realizing the dream of a region free of poverty.
The CGIAR was represented in the meetings by William Dar, Director General of ICRISAT. The Institute organized an exhibition highlighting the contributions of the CGIAR-supported Centers towards attainment of the MDGs and the achievements of the ICRISAT projects funded by the ADB.
The Asian Development Bank has been an active member of the CGIAR since 1971.
