Akwala Lolonka tends her sole assets, 30 cattle and as many sheep and goats, on rangelands outside Nairobi. Wildlife from adjacent Nairobi National Park cross her 400 acres of land and lions have killed some of her stock. A new initiative is paying Akwala to keep her lands unfenced to preserve the wildlife. "this money is sending my five children to school," she says. This is the first generation in her family to be educated. |
