International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) welcomes new Director General
CIAT is pleased to welcome Ruben Echeverría as the Institute's new director general, taking the place of Geoff Hawtin. Echeverría, who took up his new position in late March 2009, served as the executive secretary of the CGIAR Science Council in Rome, Italy, and had a distinguished career as an agricultural economist in various international institutions, including a notable position as head of agriculture and rural development at the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington, DC. A Uruguayan citizen, Echeverría received both his master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Minnesota.
New Board Chair at the International Potato Center (CIP)
CIP is pleased to welcome its new Board chair, Peter VanderZaag, who takes the place of Ruth Egger. VanderZaag, who took up the position in early April, is a private potato breeder and researcher and also serves as chair of the Agricultural Management Institute of Ontario, founding executive board member of the F.S. Partners Cooperative and president/coordinator of two non-governmental organizations in Canada. He worked with CIP from 1979 to 1991 as project leader in Central Africa and then regional director for Southeast Asia. He and his family currently operate a large potato farm in Ontario, Canada. A Canadian national, VanderZaag obtained his doctorate in agronomy and soil science from the University of Hawaii.

CGIAR sponsors “Future Foods” exhibition and a series of debates at the Science Museum in London
Is genetically modified (GM) food a good choice for our planet’s future? Can vegetarianism help to curb climate change? How often can we afford to eat fish with many species at the brink of extinction? A series of debates on food – GM food, the carbon footprint of meat and sustainable seafood - were organized by the Science Museum in collaboration with the CGIAR in the winter of 2009. |
