Nominations for CGIAR Science Council Membership
The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) is seeking an eminent scientist to fill a membership position in its Science Council (SC) in October 2008.
The CGIAR is the largest publicly-funded agricultural research consortium serving developing countries, has an annual budget of about $ 520 million, and employs over 8500 staff, including more than 1000 scientists, working in over 100 countries.
The Science Council enhances and promotes the quality, relevance and impact of science in the CGIAR. SC Members mobilize the global scientific community around the mission and goals of the CGIAR. SC Members analyze trends, needs, gaps and priorities for research geared towards both national and international development goals. They advise the CGIAR on strategies and organizational modes for carrying out the System's research to make it efficient, effective and relevant in terms of the overarching goals of the Consultative Group. Candidates for selection as SC members should meet the following criteria:
- eminence in a field of social, biological or physical science, including international recognition of research achievements;
- internationally recognized experience in international agricultural science for development and familiarity with the CGIAR System;
- expertise in monitoring and evaluation of investments in agriculture science and technology for development of relevance to the CGIAR research portfolio; including the evaluation of performance measurement and impact pathways of global agricultural research for development.
- experience with a cross disciplinary approach to scientific research, especially relating to agricultural and natural resources research for international development and poverty reduction;
- experience in research management and in having to make judgments on competing priorities and objectives;
- professional and personal attributes compatible with operational needs and global nature of the SC, particularly successful experience in monitoring and evaluation of international research programs;
- relevant experience in working with national agricultural research institutions, academies of science, universities, NGOs or the private sector;
- excellent oral and written English language skills
Nominations of qualified individuals from developing countries and of women candidates are highly encouraged.
A member of the SC has an initial term of two years, with a possibility of two renewals for a total term of up to 6 years. He/she is expected to make a commitment of up to 50 working days per year for participating in at least two meetings of the SC, and other meetings in regular or virtual mode as necessary. SC Members receive honorarium for days worked, in addition to business class travel and per diem to attend SC-related events.
