CGIAR: Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research
Nourishing the Future through Scientific Excellence

Call for Nominations for the 2009 CGIAR Science Awards

The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Chair’s Science Awards recognize and reward excellence in science. The CGIAR has acknowledged outstanding performance through awards since 1981 when the King Baudouin Award was initiated. In an effort to further promote the importance of science in the broader community and the significance of communications in research and development work, the CGIAR established a science communication award and journalism award in 2002.

The 2009 Award categories:

  • Awards for Promising Young Scientist, Outstanding Scientist, and Outstanding Scientific Article will each carry a cash prize of $5,000.

  • Awards for Outstanding Scientific Support Team and Outstanding Partnership will each carry a cash prize of $10,000.
  • Awards for Outstanding Communications and Outstanding Agricultural Journalism will each carry a cash prize of $5000.

The winners of all awards will be announced at the Science Awards Ceremony in conjunction with the Global Conference on Agricultural Research for Development (GCARD) to be held in Montpellier, France in late March 2010. Winners will be offered travel support to enable them to receive the award at GCARD 2010.

Nomination, Evaluation, and Selection Procedures

Nominees for all awards - aside from the Journalism Award - must be from CGIAR Centers or other groups/organizations (such as NARS, advanced research institutions, civil society, private sector) who are collaborators in the implementation of a program with a CGIAR Center. Nominees may be from the headquarters or from the outreach research sites/offices of a center/institution. Previous awardees do not qualify for nomination.

Each CGIAR Chair’s Science Award nomination must be endorsed by the Head/Director of the nominating institution/organization. An Evaluation and Selection Panel composed of the Chair of the Science Council and two eminent scientists from institutions outside the CGIAR will evaluate nominations and select the winners of the following awards: Promising Young Scientist, Outstanding Scientist, Outstanding Scientific Support Team, Outstanding Partnership, and Outstanding Scientific Article.

The nominations for the Communication Award and Journalism Award will be evaluated by an international panel of respected media practitioners. The panel will select the winning entry.
